At home with Brooke Fairgray and her beautiful colourful home
We moved to the coast 2 years ago and it has been the best decision for our family. Raising kids by the sea is a privledge not lost on me. Grayson 5, and Marsden 3.
We are also close to family now. I was born here, but raised on the other side of Auckland and completely undervalued how grounding it would feel to come home. It took 7 months to find our house, a private sale, retirees moving to Coromandel and it feels like we struck gold. Mortgaged up to our eyeballs, but beyond happy to be here.
Mum and nana are home-makers, I got my love of style from them. Although my taste favours colour and print, that sentiment of being intentional with space and taking love and care with the detail remains. Upstairs is fairly neutral; something about a clear space for a chaotic mind. And my mind is often in chaos, I am brand manager for The Facialist, co-founded Memphis Poster Club (monogrammed letter-art, printed to order) and am about to relaunch coveted childrenswear label Phoenix and The Fox. Gosh that feel's a lot when i write it out, but something in me can't help but go ALL IN.Downstairs is the kids zone and i have been really playful with colour. And am always changing up their bedding. The paint was a lock-down glow-up. Partly therapy; it felt so productive to paint everything from the original greige to fresh crispy white, and then go back and add in pops of colour. And part-creative purge; I've always worked in the creative industry but it had been so long between doing a project for myself or my family. I started with the door frames, orange for G and Pink for Mars, then added more from there. I wholeheartedly believe colour and print is like the backing track to their childhood - Much like music can take you back to a place and time, I hope in years to come my adult-kids will see a tone, or a print and recall their childhood and the love that surrounded them. Nostalgic? Thats the word right? Even it the nostalgia hasn't happened yet. That's what I'm creating here. Well, Hopefully.
